Statcounter measures the share of page views on sites carrying its tracking code, drawn from over 3 billion monthly page views. It does not measure users, installs or devices.
The August 2026 reading is the latest completed month. Chrome and Safari together account for 85.22 points of the six browsers Statcounter lists; Edge, Firefox, Samsung Internet and Opera split 12.29 points between them.

The device split reorders everything below Chrome. Edge ranks second on desktop at 10.46% and does not appear in Statcounter’s top six on mobile at all. Safari inverts: 5.24% on desktop, 25.87% on mobile.
Chrome is the only one of the four that clears 60% on both platforms.

Where Edge And Firefox Sit On Mobile
Statcounter’s mobile top six for August 2026 runs Chrome, Safari, Samsung Internet, Opera, UC Browser and Firefox. Edge falls outside it, so no mobile figure is published for Edge in that panel.
Firefox does appear, at 0.75%. Mobile is also where Chrome’s command-line surface gets awkward, and passing startup arguments to Chrome on Android needs a flag plus ADB rather than a plain terminal call.

Chrome’s readings across these four rows span from 54.7% in the United States to 89.07% in India. Safari runs the opposite way, from 29.11% in the United States down to 2.82% in India.
Edge is the steadiest of the four outside India, sitting between 6.66% and 7.37%. Firefox posts its highest reading here in Europe.

India is also where Opera outranks Safari, at 3.93% against 2.82%. Hardware mix shapes these tables more than software does, and Chromebook shipment data broken out by country covers one slice of that hardware picture.

W3Counter, run by Awio Web Services, publishes its own monthly reading based on traffic to sites using its free web stats. It is a different sample with a different denominator, so the figures are not interchangeable with Statcounter’s.
W3Counter put Chrome at 80.3% in July 2026 and Safari at 7.4%. Statcounter’s August 2026 readings were 69.39% and 15.83%. Both panels rank Chrome first and Safari second; they disagree sharply on the size of the gap.

Those year-over-year moves coincided with a large shift in W3Counter’s own platform mix. Windows 10 went from 23.51% of its measured traffic in July 2025 to 58.76% in July 2026, while Android 10 fell from 27.13% to 13.68% and iOS 18 from 13.18% to 5.86%. W3Counter has not published a note describing the two as related.
Linux also moved inside that panel, from 2.34% to 4.99%. Text-mode clients such as the Lynx browser and w3m, which doubles as a terminal pager, sit far below the reporting threshold in both trackers.
Reading Chrome vs Firefox vs Safari vs Edge Market Share Data
Every figure above is a share of sampled page views for a stated month. None of it counts people, accounts, installations or devices, and none of it can be converted into a user total.
Regional and platform tables come from separate panels with separate denominators, so a row from the India table cannot be added to a row from the desktop table. The same applies across trackers: Statcounter’s 69.39% and W3Counter’s 80.3% describe different samples in different months.
Local behaviour also stays invisible to both. Neither panel sees traffic routed through browser-based proxy services, and neither records what happens on a page after it loads, including the shortcuts Chrome builds on its new tab page.
Device-level context matters too. A machine set up by enabling the Linux container on a Chromebook can report under more than one platform label depending on what is running.
