Whatever number you type, search gives you one
That is the actual joke and almost nobody knows it. Do a barrel roll 2 times, do a barrel roll 20 times, do a barrel roll 100 times, do a barrel roll 1000 times, the absurd strings with forty digits in them, all of it gets you exactly one rotation. People keep escalating the number as if there is a threshold. There is not.

Where the line comes from
A rabbit shouts it at you in a 1997 space combat game. It was already an internet catchphrase before search picked it up in late 2011, which is why z or r twice works as well as the full sentence. Same prompt, same spin.
It never got switched off
Costs nothing to run, so it stayed. That makes google barrel roll one of the few tricks you can still verify in search rather than in a rebuild, along with google askew, its quieter sibling from the same year.
For the version that ends badly, run it and then load google gravity, which is what people mean by a google gravity roll.
Nothing spins when I search it
Two usual causes. You are searching from a bar wired to a different engine, or reduced motion is switched on in your system settings, which quietly kills the animation.
