One O per page
The page numbers at the bottom of a results list are not numbers. They are the word, with an O for every page on offer, and the one you are on is the one that is underlined. Ten pages, ten Os. Click any of them to jump.
Go deep enough on a broad query and the word runs past the edge of the column. That is where the screenshots come from, and why people search the stretched spelling as if it were a separate thing.
It disappeared on phones
Mobile loads more results as you scroll instead of splitting them into pages, so the footer never gets a chance to draw the word. If you have only ever searched on a phone there is a decent chance you have never seen this at all.
How long can it get
As long as there are pages. Every version people type, gooooole, goooooooooogle, the ones with fifteen Os in them, comes from a query with a lot of results rather than a setting somewhere.
It is also the oldest joke still in the interface, older than the rotation tricks and much older than the games. If you want to see what else survived from that era, the layout at google in 1998 is the same period. And the footer links this thing sits next to are the first things eaten in zerg rush.
