Proton game compatibility statistics show 30,006 Steam Deck Verified or Playable titles in 2026, while anti-cheat remains a major Linux gaming barrier.

Valve had rated 30,006 Steam titles Verified or Playable for the Steam Deck as of 31 August 2026, against 6,848 rated Unsupported. Proton game compatibility on Linux now spans tens of thousands of titles, and the failures that remain sit mostly in one place: anti-cheat. This page covers the rating counts, the anti-cheat block, what shipped in Proton 11.0-1, and how native Linux builds compare.

Proton Game Compatibility On Linux

30,006 Steam titles carried a Steam Deck Verified or Playable rating on 31 August 2026.
6,848 titles carried a Steam Deck Unsupported rating on the same date.
640 of 1,166 tracked anti-cheat games are listed Broken on Linux or Proton.
Proton 11.0-1 shipped on 7 July 2026, rebased on Wine 11.0.
Linux ran 3.90% of systems in Valve’s August 2026 Steam survey.

How Many Games Have A Proton Compatibility Rating On Linux?

Valve rates Steam titles for the Steam Deck in three tiers. On 31 August 2026 the SteamDB tally stood at 8,939 Verified, 21,067 Playable and 6,848 Unsupported, with the Verified and Playable tiers together crossing 30,000 for the first time.

Playable outnumbers Verified by more than two to one. Valve’s criteria cover controller mapping, launcher windows, default graphics settings and text legibility at the Deck’s 800p screen, so a game can run correctly under Proton and still miss Verified.

The same SteamDB filter showed 25,010 Verified or Playable titles on 24 January 2026. Valve tracks SteamOS separately: 31,265 games were marked SteamOS Compatible on 31 August 2026, a different rating with its own criteria. Month-by-month platform figures behind these ratings sit in this Steam Linux Runtime report.

Ratings cover only what Valve has formally reviewed. Tens of thousands of Steam titles carry no rating at all and can still be launched through Proton.

What Blocks Proton Game Compatibility On Linux?

Anti-cheat is the concentrated failure. The Are We Anti-Cheat Yet database tracks 1,166 games that ship an anti-cheat system, and 640 of them are listed Broken, meaning they do not run under Proton or Wine.

Only 195 titles, 17% of the tracked set, are listed Supported with official Linux backing. Another 276 are listed Running. The 53 Denied entries are the hard floor, where the publisher has ruled out Linux clients.

Which anti-cheat systems run under Proton?

Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye both distribute Proton-compatible modules, and the database lists titles on both systems as Supported, including Dead by Daylight, Halo Infinite and DayZ on those vendors’ modules.

The same two vendors also sit behind Broken and Denied entries. PUBG: Battlegrounds runs BattlEye and is listed Broken; Fortnite and Apex Legends run Easy Anti-Cheat and are listed Denied. Enabling Linux support is a per-title decision by the publisher, not a change to the anti-cheat itself.

Riot’s Vanguard is the clearest refusal, with Valorant listed Denied. Valve’s own VAC takes the opposite route, which is why Counter-Strike 2 ships a native Linux client through Steam rather than depending on a Proton path, and why most setup problems there come down to drivers and Vulkan versions.

What Did Proton 11.0-1 Change For Linux Compatibility?

Proton 11.0-1 was released on 7 July 2026 as the first stable build in the 11.0 series, rebased on Wine 11.0. Valve’s release notes list 13 titles promoted from Proton Experimental to playable, among them Resident Evil (1996), Dino Crisis and SHOGUN: Total War.

Five titles are listed as newly playable: Unknown Faces, Gothic 1 Classic, X-Plane 12, Breath of Fire IV and Deadly Premonition. Most of the release weight sits in the component stack, where the Direct3D translation layers update on their own schedule.

Games that already target Vulkan skip the Direct3D translation stack entirely, so component updates land unevenly across a library.

Native Linux Builds Versus Proton Game Compatibility On Linux

Boiling Steam counts new Steam releases with native Linux binaries every week. Between 26 August and 2 September 2026 there were 110 native Linux releases against 825 Windows releases, or about 13.3% of that week’s titles.

The weekly share moved between 10.5% and 14.9% across the published editions below. Roughly seven in eight new Steam titles ship no Linux binary, which leaves Proton as the only route to a Linux audience for most of them.

How Big Is The Linux Audience Behind Proton Compatibility?

Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey is opt-in and describes the systems that responded in a given month. Linux read 3.90% in August 2026, down 0.11 points on July, against Windows at 93.95% and OSX at 2.14%.

The same survey read 2.64% for Linux in August 2025. The March 2026 reading of 5.33% remains the highest Linux figure Valve has published.

March coincided with a 31.85-point drop in Simplified Chinese language share and a 16.82-point rise in English, so the survey mix shifted in the same period. GamingOnLinux also flagged two unnamed distributions in the March Linux breakdown.

SteamOS Holo took 21.07% of Linux systems in August 2026, down 1.17 points, so desktop distributions hold the rest. Longer runs of these readings appear in this Linux gaming share breakdown and in the wider PC gaming operating system split.

Handheld and desktop usage patterns behind that line are tracked in these Steam Deck Linux usage statistics, while the yearly desktop Linux trend sits on a separate measurement basis from Steam’s survey.
