This is the pattern most comparisons miss. Windows holds 8.3% of all surveyed sites but 19.7% of the top million and 22.8% of the top 100,000 (W3Techs, 5 August 2026).
The long tail of the web is mass shared hosting, where per-seat licensing makes Windows uneconomic, so millions of low-traffic sites pull the overall figure down. BSD Server OS Market Share: FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and DragonFly
BSD sits at 0.1% of websites with a known operating system, roughly 600 times smaller than Linux on the public web. Within that sliver, FreeBSD is nearly the whole measurable market.

The methodological caveat matters more here than anywhere else in this article. A web scan can only count machines that serve HTTP under their own identity, so BSD deployments in firewalls, storage appliances, CDN edge nodes, and network operating systems are structurally invisible to it. The Netcraft row puts the percentages in proportion: W3Techs reports shares of its top 10 million surveyed sites, while Netcraft counts nearly 1.49 billion sites in total. A 0.1% BSD share is a share of the surveyed subset, not of the whole internet.
