Web hosting provider market share in 2026, highlighting leading providers, site rankings, server software, and cloud revenue.

Amazon is used by 4.5% of all websites and 21.7% of the top 1,000, according to the W3Techs survey dated 1 September 2026. That single provider splits into two different rankings depending on which slice of the web you count. This post sets out web hosting provider market share by company, by site popularity tier, by server software and by cloud revenue, using the latest completed release of each dataset.

Web Hosting Provider Market Share: Key Figures

Shopify leads at 5.3% of all websites (W3Techs, 1 September 2026).
Amazon reaches 21.7% of the top 1,000 sites, its highest tier (W3Techs, 1 September 2026).
Netcraft counted 1,494,915,628 sites in July 2026.
Cloudflare answers for 28.29% of the million busiest sites (Netcraft, July 2026).
Cloud infrastructure spending hit $143.4 billion in Q2 2026 (Synergy Research Group).

Which Companies Hold The Largest Web Hosting Provider Market Share?

W3Techs measures the share of all websites it surveys that use a given provider. It is a count of sites, not customers and not revenue.

Shopify tops the list at 5.3%. Hostinger follows at 5.1% and Amazon at 4.5%. W3Techs recorded Hostinger overtaking Amazon for second place on 10 February 2026.

Three of the top four are site builders or commerce platforms rather than traditional hosts, which is why this ranking looks nothing like a list of hosting companies ordered by revenue.

No provider passes 5.3%, and the tenth-ranked company sits at 2.2%. The spread across the entire top ten is narrower than three percentage points. Fragmentation at this layer contrasts sharply with the concentration visible in cloud infrastructure share tracked by operating system.

How Web Hosting Provider Market Share Changes By Site Ranking

W3Techs publishes the same measurement broken down by traffic rank. Cross-technology reports cover only providers above 1% usage, which leaves three companies in this view.

Amazon rises at every step, from 4.5% overall to 21.7% of the top 1,000. Hostinger runs the other way and registers 0.0% in the top 1,000. Shopify peaks in the top million at 8.2%, then falls at each tier above it.

Any single web hosting provider market share figure is incomplete without the tier it refers to. The same pattern shows up in Linux web server market share data and in Nginx and HAProxy deployment counts.

How Many Sites And Machines Sit Behind Web Hosting Provider Market Share?

Netcraft polls hostnames that answer an HTTP request and reports sites, domains and web-facing computers as three separate counts.

The July 2026 survey received responses from 1,494,915,628 sites across 305,348,459 domains and 14,772,048 web-facing computers. That was a monthly gain of 5.5 million sites, 1.2 million domains and 118,277 machines.

Domains305,348,459+1.2 million
Web-facing computers14,772,048+118,277

Hostnames outnumber machines by roughly a hundred to one, which is what lets a small number of operators carry very large site counts. Netcraft does not report the operating system split in this table; server operating system share is tracked separately.

Web Server Software Beneath The Web Hosting Provider Market Share

Netcraft publishes vendor share against several different denominators. All sites, active sites, the million busiest sites and web-facing computers are four distinct populations and cannot be compared as one series.

Across all sites in July 2026, nginx led at 20.37% and Cloudflare followed at 16.67%. OpenResty gained 39.5 million sites in that month alone, a 49.1% jump that moved it to 8.02%. nginx lost 9.8 million sites over the same month.

Top Million Busiest Sites

The order inverts at the top of the traffic curve. Cloudflare answers for 28.29% of the million busiest sites, ahead of nginx at 20.02%.

Counted by machine rather than by hostname, nginx ran on 43.92% of web-facing computers in July 2026, Apache on 18.82% and Microsoft on 5.73%. Deployment patterns by workload type appear in sector-level server deployment figures and in the file server and NAS platform split.

Cloud Infrastructure Concentration Versus Web Hosting Provider Market Share

Synergy Research Group measures vendor revenue from cloud infrastructure services, covering IaaS, PaaS and hosted private cloud. This is a revenue metric, not a site count.

Q2 2026 enterprise spending reached $143.4 billion, up 43% year over year and the eleventh successive quarter of accelerating growth. Trailing twelve-month revenues reached $500 billion.

Synergy reports the top three at 67% of the public cloud market specifically. Public IaaS and PaaS services grew 47% in the quarter, and the US market grew 49%. Amazon appearing at 4.5% of all websites and 28% of cloud revenue is where the two structures meet. Provider-level operating system use across those platforms is covered in the cloud provider Linux usage breakdown, alongside data centre market figures.

Hostinger states a compound annual growth rate of 58% across that period. Its Kodee agent handled 81% of customer support interactions by the end of 2025, up from 50% at the start of the year, which the company links to roughly €9 million in savings for the year.

What The 2026 Web Hosting Provider Market Share Data Shows

Two structures sit inside the same market. At the hosting-brand layer no company passes 5.3% of all websites.

At the infrastructure layer Amazon, Microsoft and Google hold 28%, 20% and 15% of cloud infrastructure services revenue. Amazon is the only name that carries weight in both, and the gap between its 4.5% site share and its 21.7% share of the top 1,000 is where the two views separate.
